This time period was one of many “firsts” for the Kensington neighborhood. In the 1910s the first period of mass emigration and resettlement in Kensington occurred, a trend which would repeat itself many times over and come to define the history of the region. At this time, blue-collar Anglo-Saxons moved farther away from downtown as their socio-economic status improved. The quaint vacant Victorian homes in The Market became suitable new residences for the rapidly growing Toronto Jewish community. Soon, the area became the centre of Jewish life in Toronto. The Jews soon transformed the neighborhood into a mixed use commercial/residential space. This short 20 year period chronicles the creation of the Kensington Market familiar to Torontonians today.
